Ask most people to picture Italy and they’ll conjure sun-baked piazzas and Mediterranean coastlines. Trentino-Alto Adige is something else entirely — and for a growing number of expats, that is precisely the point.
Bordering Austria and Switzerland, this autonomous double region sits at the top of Italy geographically and, by most quality-of-life measures, near the top in every other sense too. The air is clean, the infrastructure is impeccable, the schools are excellent, and the landscapes — Dolomite peaks, apple orchards, terraced vineyards, and glacier-fed lakes — are among the most spectacular in Europe.
The region divides into two distinct provinces. To the south, Trento is a refined, Italian-speaking university city with a progressive outlook, a compact historic centre, and a remarkably liveable character. To the north, Bolzano — or Bozen in German — is the capital of Alto Adige/Südtirol, a bilingual province where Austrian and Italian influences sit comfortably side by side. Smaller towns such as Merano, known for its mild climate and spa culture, and Bressanone, an elegant medieval market town, offer a more intimate scale of Alpine living.
Trentino-Alto Adige cost of living reflects the region’s premium quality — monthly expenses typically run from €1,600 to €2,600 — but the value proposition is strong. What you spend here, you feel in everyday life: in the reliability of public services, the quality of food and wine, and the ease of getting around.
This is not the Italy of postcards. It is quieter, colder, and more orderly. For the right expat, it is also close to perfect.
