Sardinia operates on its own terms
Sardinia operates on its own terms. The second largest island in the Mediterranean has never been particularly interested in conforming to mainland Italian norms — in its language, its cuisine, its traditions, or its pace of life. For expats who want something genuinely apart from the European mainstream, that fierce independence is a large part of the appeal.
The practical reality of island living is worth understanding clearly from the outset. Sardinia is not remote by Mediterranean standards — flights connect Cagliari, Olbia, and Alghero to major European cities year-round — but the island does require a degree of self-sufficiency and forward planning that mainland living does not. Those who make that adjustment tend to find the trade-off more than worthwhile.
Cagliari, the regional capital, is the most complete urban base — a proper southern Italian city with good universities, reliable healthcare, an expanding food scene, and a harbour setting of real beauty. In the north, Sassari provides a more workaday but equally functional alternative. Between them, the island divides into landscapes of extraordinary variety: the emerald waters and granite headlands of the Costa Smeralda near Porto Cervo, the wild interior Barbagia highlands around Nuoro, the ancient Nuragic sites scattered across the central plains, and a western coastline around Oristano and Bosa that remains largely undiscovered by international visitors.
Sardinia cost of living is moderate by Italian standards, with monthly expenses typically ranging from €1,300 to €2,000. The Costa Smeralda sits in a category of its own at the luxury end, but the vast majority of the island remains genuinely affordable — particularly in the interior and along the less visited western coast.
Moving to Sardinia is a commitment rather than a compromise. The expats who thrive here are those who arrive not despite its island character, but because of it.
