Calabria
Calabria is not interested in your expectations
Calabria is not interested in your expectations. Italy’s toe — the narrow, mountainous peninsula that kicks out into the Mediterranean between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas — has been written off, romanticised, and misunderstood in roughly equal measure. The expats who actually live here tend to find it more complex, more rewarding, and considerably more beautiful than its reputation suggests.
The geography alone is extraordinary. Calabria has over 780 kilometres of coastline, the ancient Sila and Aspromonte plateaus rising to near-Alpine heights in the interior, and a string of Greek and Byzantine archaeological sites that predate Rome itself. The Ionian coast around Tropea — perched on its clifftop above turquoise water — has become one of southern Italy’s most photographed destinations, and for good reason. But expats who look beyond the coastal hotspots find a region of real depth: in the Norman cathedral city of Gerace, the ancient hilltop stronghold of Stilo, the bergamot groves around Reggio Calabria, and the increasingly sought-after hill towns of the Sila such as Camigliatello Silano.
The practical picture has improved meaningfully in recent years. Fast rail connections now link Reggio Calabria to Naples and Rome, several towns have launched €1 house schemes and incentive programmes to attract remote workers and foreign residents, and a small but active expat community has taken root across the region.
Calabria cost of living is as low as it gets in mainland Italy. Most expats live comfortably on €1,000 to €1,500 per month, with property purchase prices and rental costs that remain genuinely extraordinary by European standards.
Moving to Calabria demands an open mind and a degree of self-sufficiency. What it gives back — space, warmth, authenticity, and a Mediterranean lifestyle at its most undiluted — is difficult to put a price on.
