Living in Italy · Our Story
From Sicilian Roots to an Italian Future
This is more than a website. It's the living record of a dream that has been quietly growing for decades.
“Town by town, region by region, we are building a bridge between the life we’ve known in Australia and the life that has always called to us from across the world.”
Shaped by family stories, fuelled by late-night research, and now taking real form — our journey to retire in Italy is the most exciting chapter of our lives.
Where We Come From
Our Italian Roots Run Deep
Our family heritage traces back to the mountains surrounding Santa Teresa di Riva in Sicily’s Messina province — a place of rugged beauty, strong traditions, and ties that stretch across generations and oceans.
Growing up in North Queensland, Australia, we were surrounded by the stories, recipes, and values passed down through Sicilian generations. Sicilian sausage at Easter. Pasta al tonno in bianco made exactly the way Nonna taught us. The importance of family, generosity, hard work, and gathering around a shared table.
Even on the other side of the world, those connections never faded. We still exchange messages with cousins in Italy, speaking Italian whenever we can. The connection has always remained — quiet, constant, and impossible to ignore.
Italy has never been just a destination to us. It’s woven into who we are.

Living in Italy · Origin Story
How It Began
The Dream Awakens
What began as quiet curiosity slowly became something much bigger — late nights spent watching Italian house tours and endlessly scrolling through idealista.it. With a glass of wine in hand, we’d point to stone farmhouses in Umbria, coastal apartments in Puglia, and hillside villas in Sicily.
“Could this really be home one day?”
The more we explored, the clearer the dream became. This wasn’t simply a retirement fantasy. It felt like a homecoming — a chance to live immersed in the culture, language, food, and rhythms that had shaped our family for generations.
01
Stone Farmhouses in Umbria
The rolling hills, ancient olive groves, and quieter pace of Umbria offered a slower, more grounded version of Italian life — far from the tourist circuits, closer to the real thing.
02
Coastal Life in Puglia
Whitewashed towns, endless coastline, and an unhurried pace — Puglia became a recurring dream. Affordable, authentic, and growing in appeal for Australian expats.
03
Hillside Villas in Sicily
Always the emotional centre of gravity. Sicily combines our family heritage, warm climate, dramatic landscapes, and some of Italy’s most welcoming communities.
The Practical Question
7,882 Towns. Which One Is Right for You?
The dream was clear. But the practical reality of Italy is daunting in the most wonderful way. With 20 regions, 107 provinces, and thousands of towns — each with its own character, climate, cost, and community — one question kept returning every time we looked at a property listing or a map.
7,882
towns across Italy’s 20 regions and 107 provinces — each with its own climate, culture, healthcare access, cost of living, and community feel.
The question of which town is right for you depends on far more than a beautiful photograph or affordable house listing. It depends on healthcare access, walkability, local community, climate, distance to airports, cost of living, and a hundred small-but-important details that only become clear when you dig deep.
That question — how do you actually choose the right town? — became the foundation for everything you now see on this site.

Our Vision
Our "Go Years" in Italy
We often talk about our “go years” — those vibrant early retirement years when health, energy, and curiosity are still at their peak. This is the chapter when we want to truly live: to explore every corner of Italy, immerse ourselves in a local community, master the language properly, and embrace the rhythm of the seasons rather than the constant pressure of the clock.
“We want our go-go years to be filled with new friendships, new skills, new discoveries — and the deep satisfaction of finally living in the country that has always felt like part of home.”
We imagine a home that balances our Sicilian roots with the practicalities of long-term living — excellent healthcare access, walkable streets, strong community connections, and enough space to welcome family and friends from Australia.
Mornings at the local bar for cappuccino and unhurried conversation
Markets overflowing with seasonal produce we’ll finally learn to cook properly
Long lunches stretching naturally into the afternoon
Evenings with local wine, warm air, and effortless sociability
Mastering the language and truly integrating into a local community
Exploring every region — from Alpine north to sun-drenched south
We’re approaching this journey the same way we’ve approached every important chapter of life: with thoughtful research, careful financial planning, and genuine openness to whatever Italy has to teach us. We’re not just dreaming about Italy — we’re actively building our future there.
